Biography

Dr. Umer Jan is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Digital Technology Governance and Policy research group, Hasso Plattner Institute, University of Potsdam. He works on a project, which explores the interaction between politics and digital technologies, with a particular emphasis on internet technologies. He holds a PhD in Politics and International Relations. During his doctoral studies, he has presented his research at prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Chicago, and University of Manchester, as well as at the European Sociological Association Conference and other venues. His journal articles and book chapters, which focus on critical social theory and development studies, are published in leading research journals. Additionally, he has written several articles for major international news publications. As a university lecturer, he teaches various modules on International Relations, Postcolonial Theory, Research Methodology, and Media Studies. 

Research Focus

Dr. Umer Jan’s research focuses on development and critical development studies, social and critical theory, and the interaction of digital technologies and politics, with a specific emphasis on South Asia. His interest foci include:
