In South Asia, the Path to Power Project examines how digital technologies, misinformation, and populist movements influence political behavior in democracies like India. With rising polarization and social unrest, this region provides crucial insights into the interplay between digital platforms and political dynamics.
South Asia is a region of immense diversity and significance, both historically and in the contemporary global context. Taken together, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka region are home to over 1.8 billion people, with a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and religions. Studies of this region are critical for understanding global dynamics in geopolitics, economics, democratic trends and social development. South Asia’s strategic location, rapidly growing economies, and complex socio-political issues, make research into the region vital.

Our research provides insights into the national politics, electoral dynamics, and political communications within these countries. We discuss topics such as mis/disinformation, intra-regional cooperation and conflicts as well as the region’s crucial significance for the global political and economic processes.
India, the world’s largest democracy, has a vibrant and diverse political landscape shaped by its federal structure, multiple political parties, and active civic participation. The country operates under a parliamentary system with a bicameral legislature, including the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and Rajya Sabha (Council of States). Politics in India is characterized by regional dynamics, coalition governments, and the presence of numerous national and state-level parties. Key political issues include economic development, caste and religion, corruption, and social welfare. In recent years, digital technology has significantly influenced political campaigns, voter engagement, and the spread of information and misinformation.
